Savitri Devi
Savitri Devi is 55 years old. Three years ago, her husband died of illness. He had been sick and bedridden for 16 years.
She belongs to block and district of Kangra and has got two daughters and three sons. Radha, her daughter who is an ENSS field worker lives with her since her divorce.
Savitri Devi got married when she was 15 years old. Today, she and her eldest son run a small business of knitting shawls. During her husband's illness, she took care of him and so the production was not much but after his death, it has increased. Despite local success, she has no plans to expand this business. In addition to the returns from the shawl business, she gets some money through the widow pension provided by the government.
Her biggest challenge earlier was to take care of her ill husband, now she is worried about her daughter Radha. Savitri Devi fears the time when she will no longer be around to help her daughter cope with her situation as a divorced woman.
She thinks it is important to share knowledge, to teach something and learn something in return. Therefore, Savitri Devi wants to make sure that the information she gets through various organisations is spread to others in her village as well.
Her advice to other women is that "whenever you feel good and healthy work as much as you can and do not be lazy, because that way you can also get a well deserved rest whenever you really need it."
