“SUTRA was founded to act as a ‘conscious keeper’ of society. In order to achieve that, we needed to establish our credibility first which was done through service provision model, and then we started acting as Conscious Keepers by raising number of issues that affect Gender Equity”
Subhash Mendharpurkar grew up in the slums of Pune in an asset-less family. He later studied at university where he obtained a Postgraduate certificate in Community Development.
After working as a free-lance journalist and lecturer in undergraduate colleges, he founded SUTRA with the support of other NGOs in 1977.

Working Environment |
 SUTRA is active in Himachal Pradesh, a small and hilly state near the Himalayas in North-West India.
Being one of India’s richer states, the net per capita income equals about 2000
(US $ 45) Rs., but this number is difficult to measure as it is mainly a subsistence economy that prevails. |
|
 SUTRA is built as a campus and half the workers live in its buildings. An average of 30 employees are working full-time and 70 part-time. SUTRA is now active with more than 500 village-based groups. |
|
 There are also several rooms dedicated to teaching and meetings. It has its own computer facilities and possess an extensive library in the field of women empowerment. |
